The Importance of Physical Activity

Insufficient physical activity has been identified as one of the main factors for mortality from diseases non transmissible. People with an insufficient level of physical activity have a 20% to 30% higher risk of death compared to people who achieve a sufficient level of physical activity.

The WHO defines physical activity as any body movement produced by skeletal muscles, with consequent energy consumption. The physical activity, both moderate and intense, improves health, is one of the best habits that promotes well-being on a physical, mental and emotional level.

It has been shown that physical activity helps prevent and control nontransmissible diseases, such as heart diseases, stroke, diabetes, and various types of cancer. It also helps prevent hypertension, to maintain a healthy body weight.

That is why it is important to perform physical activity. The WHO recommends:

Perform moderate aerobic physical activity for at least 150 to 300 minutes or vigorous  aerobic physical activities for at least 75 to 150 minutes; or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous activities throughout the week.

In addition to health benefits, societies that are more active can generate additional investment returns including less fossil fuel use, cleaner air, and less congested and safe streets and roads.
