WHAT IS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?
A complex system of cells, tissues, organs, and the substances they produce, which help the body fight infection and other diseases.
HOW DOES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM WORK?
It protects the body against substances that are considers to be harmful or rare. These substances are called antigens. They can be germs such as bacteria and viruses; or chemical substances or toxins.
When the immune system identifies an antigen, it will fight it. This is called an immune response.
WINTER SEASON AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
The cold weather in our country is between October to March of each year. Exposure to extreme cold weather causes: acute respiratory infections, seasonal influenza, burn accidents, and carbon monoxide poisoning.
In this cold season it is important to take into account the following preventive measures:
Personal hygiene and sanitation. It includes frequent hand washing, sneezing etiquette (covering nose and mouth with the forearm), no spitting, no touching of the face with dirty hands, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects of common use.
Use of adequate clothing. Hat, gloves, scarf and socks.
Avoid sudden changes in temperatures and strong winds.
Eat foods and take supplements that help strengthen the immune system.
Take plenty of liquids.
Do not self-medicate.
HOW TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
The immune system is the defense shield of our body against diseases and is strengthened with a good diet rich in vegetables, supplemented with food, water, exercise, enough rest and avoiding stress.
