WHAT IS DIABETES?
A chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels.
It occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces (type 2 diabetes).
Insulin is a hormone that regulates the blood sugar, it acts as a key that allows blood sugar to enter the body’s cells for use as energy.
TYPES OF DIABETES
Type 1
It is also known as juvenile diabetes. It is characterized by presenting at an early age, usually before the age of 30. Currently, no one knows how to prevent it.
Type 2
This type is the most common and mainly affects adults, it is also related to obesity. This type of diabetes can be prevented.
Gestational
Gestational diabetes is hyperglycemia with blood glucose values above normal, but below diabetes diagnoses. It occurs during pregnancy.
HEALTH IMPACT
Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, the blood vessels, the eyes, the kidneys, and the nerves.
